What is Optimal Health?
We live in a society where we are on overload. We have everything at our fingertips, and with this abundant amount of information, we are confused. We are living excessively; in debt, acquiring too many things, becoming over weight, and this is just the beginning. It’s time to get back to the basics to create optimal health.
What is optimal health? It’s not just an absence of disease but a balance between physical, mental, emotional, environmental, spiritual and social components. It is freedom from limitations and restrictions, physical freedom of movement, strength, flexibility, durability and balance. It’s a complete state of wellness, a place where you genuinely feel alive.
To achieve and sustain optimal health, ailments or not, we need perspective. When we “get into ourselves” or focus on the area that needs attention, our intuition comes into play and we become aware and explore how to optimize that area. Whether it’s eating nutrient dense food, hiking in the mountains, traveling, finding a loving partner, adopting a pet, or whatever else that helps us create a passionate life full of purpose.
The only person who can bring your life back into balance and your health to its most favorable state is YOU. Simply put – if you don’t take control of your life, outside influences will. External factors can trigger illness such as environmental toxins or injuries that can lead to imbalance, but the root of a health challenge is most likely related to an emotional or spiritual component. When these are taken into consideration, we experience positive or optimal outcomes.
Back in the 1900’s our major cause of early death was infectious diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or enteritis. In our modern culture, it is chronic lifestyles diseases such as heart disease, cancer and emphysema/bronchitis. To break the chain of chronic disease we must prioritize these goals; regular physical activity, good nutrition and stress management.
The whole reason we want to be healthy, after all, is to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. By learning, and transforming, we can achieve the state of wellness we seek, without unnecessary deprivation and pointless sacrifice. Instead of dieting, we can increase our intake of whole, unprocessed foods that are both healthy and delicious, and we can celebrate our meals with flowers, music and good company. Instead of exercising on a treadmill at the local gym, we can enjoy moving our bodies while hiking in the woods, practicing yoga on the beach or dancing at a night club. These changes are all about living, which is the point of being well.
Reaching optimal wellness does not need to be a chore; rather, it can be an adventure. By getting creative about how to expand into the life we want, and by truly savoring this life — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually — we can create new paths to wellness that leave us feeling better on every level. And that is what health is all about.
Life is not simply about surviving, it’s about thriving. You have the opportunity to do it now.
