What is Optimal Health?

What is Optimal Health?

We live in a society where we are on overload. We have everything at our fingertips, and with this abundant amount of information, we are confused.  We are living excessively; in debt, acquiring too many things, becoming over weight, and this is just the beginning.  It’s time to get back to the basics to create optimal health.

What is optimal health? It’s not just an absence of disease but a balance between physical, mental, emotional, environmental, spiritual and social components.  It is freedom from limitations and restrictions, physical freedom of movement, strength, flexibility, durability and balance. It’s a complete state of wellness, a place where you genuinely feel alive.

To achieve and sustain optimal health, ailments or not, we need perspective. When we “get into ourselves” or focus on the area that needs attention, our intuition comes into play and we become aware and explore how to optimize that area. Whether it’s eating nutrient dense food, hiking in the mountains, traveling, finding a loving partner, adopting a pet, or whatever else that helps us create a passionate life full of purpose.

The only person who can bring your life back into balance and your health to its most favorable state is YOU.  Simply put – if you don’t take control of your life, outside influences will.  External factors can trigger illness such as environmental toxins or injuries that can lead to imbalance, but the root of a health challenge is most likely related to an emotional or spiritual component. When these are taken into consideration, we experience positive or optimal outcomes.

Back in the 1900’s our major cause of early death was infectious diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or enteritis.  In our modern culture, it is chronic lifestyles diseases such as heart disease, cancer and emphysema/bronchitis.  To break the chain of chronic disease we must prioritize these goals; regular physical activity, good nutrition and stress management.

The whole reason we want to be healthy, after all, is to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. By learning, and transforming, we can achieve the state of wellness we seek, without unnecessary deprivation and pointless sacrifice. Instead of dieting, we can increase our intake of whole, unprocessed foods that are both healthy and delicious, and we can celebrate our meals with flowers, music and good company. Instead of exercising on a treadmill at the local gym, we can enjoy moving our bodies while hiking in the woods, practicing yoga on the beach or dancing at a night club. These changes are all about living, which is the point of being well.

Reaching optimal wellness does not need to be a chore; rather, it can be an adventure. By getting creative about how to expand into the life we want, and by truly savoring this life — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually — we can create new paths to wellness that leave us feeling better on every level. And that is what health is all about.

Life is not simply about surviving, it’s about thriving.  You have the opportunity to do it now.

GET TUNED IN & TURNED ON: 7 Ways to Feel More Alive

GET TUNED IN & TURNED ON: 7 Ways to Feel More Alive

Is it possible to feel more alive than you do right now?Absolutely! I’m sure you’ve experienced both being alive, and being ALIVE: some days you are breathing, but you feel like your barely even there; other days, you are filled with a sense of exhilaration and vitality. It’s a palatable difference, something along the lines of watching TV on a black & white mini, or a flat screen, high-definition, plasma television. It’s the same experience, but the quality is worlds apart.

If you are normal you have been up, down, and everywhere in between. We understand the ups and downs of life, and have come to expect them. Down phases often bring us to a halt. Up phases wake us up. Surviving the moments in-between, is where most people exist, most of the time.

Life takes over and time seems to constrict us. We all envision of our best life, but actually having the courage to live it is another thing. Everyone uses the excuse that they would really start living, if they only had more time: while the time for living is right now.

When our eyes are open, we see there are endless reasons to celebrate each day. We start to feel a bit dead inside when we forget. The key to feeling alive is to live. Carpe Diem! Seizing the moment is the surest way to feel alive.

Are you ready to live more fully?

The following 7 Ways to Feel More Alive will help you to add more life to your life:

Stop Living in the Past:

The surest way to kill the moment is to live in the past, or get lost in the future. We must learn to live our lives in the now, or be always one step away from ourselves. Finding our rhythm and balance is a process that can only be found by living in the moment. If you stop running and take a few deep breaths, you will know exactly what you need in any given moment.

Self-Care starts with the simple act of checking in with yourself, to assess how you are and what you need. Take time to check in with yourself throughout the day and ask yourself the important questions. How am I feeling right now? What do I need right now? Ask your body what type of food it needs to be healthy, and strong; a response or knowing will guide you.

Your soul will reveal what it needs to thrive as well. Our greatest passions and joys are the food of the soul. If you find yourself feeling off centered, caught somewhere between yesterday, and tomorrow, spending a few minutes breathing deeply in quiet reflection, can instantly restart your day. While breathing slowly, wiggle and stretch about until your mind and body calm, then relax into the moment. When joy is lacking in your life you can be sure your soul is unfulfilled. To jump-start your joy take time to listen to the longings of your soul, it knows your purpose and will guide you to deeper meaning.

Connect with Your Mama:

We live on a planet that was created to sustain us. Vegetables, and fruits spring forth to nourish us, helping us grow strong, and remain healthy. Everything we need is supplied for us. The earth itself supports us, while trees provide shelter, and create the air we depend on. What was once a forest is now one of our greatest resources: cotton, paper, wood; where would we be without the trees? Dead, that’s where.

Realize how lucky you are! Give thanks for all that you have, and you will feel more alive. Spending time in nature will reconnect you with your Source and awaken your senses. Our Mama loves us. Whenever you feel out of sorts, or alone, connecting with nature will help you find your center. “Grounding” is an excellent way to clear your mind, release toxins from your body, and center in the moment; take off your shoes and walk on the ground while consciously connecting to the earth. Just as tress clean the air, the earth can assist in cleansing our body and mind.

Talk to Your Father:

There comes a time to stop thinking and start seeking answers. Our sense of value and worth never comes from an outside force; press, property and prestige will only get you so far. Joy is a quality that comes from within; it is our true nature (imagine a baby and  you’ll get what I mean). Inner peace is only obtained if one works for it. Life comes at us fast and hard, we create peace one healthy, positive choice at a time.

When we connect with God (Replace with Higher Self, Source or Infinite Intelligence if you wish) we feel more centered, alive and fulfilled. Answers come easily when we look within, one must only get quiet enough to listen. When we learn to listen to our hearts—which is where God lives—the ever guiding voice within will always lead us down the best path. Knowing what you need in any given moment requires knowing who you are. Make a commitment to spend less time talking to others — about your problems, stress, worries, etc– and take time daily to connect with yourself, calling on your soul for guidance.  Spiritual awareness will bring you to life.

Stop and Smell the Flowers:

While it sounds like a cliché, this is sage advice. The sight of flowers brings joy, their colors and fragrances uplift us, creating more endorphins – the happy chemicals in our brain.Sending a bouquet of flowers is just about guaranteed to make anyone smile. Flowers are nature’s candy.

Spend some time in nature exploring the flowers in your area. They attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other magical beings that are a wonder to behold. If you want to feel more alive, reclaim your sense of wonder and awe. Learn to slow down and appreciate your surroundings and all the pleasures of God’s green earth. Bonus tip: instead of using synthetic medicine try essential oils, which are ‘gifts of the earth’ created by plants and flowers. Essential Oils have natural health benefits ranging from lessening anxiety to soothing your muscles after a Zumba class.

Get Creative:

To create is to surrender. Creating is an intuitive act. Though you may start out with a game plan, your creation will eventually take on a mind of its own, guiding, and moving you forward. Whether it be cooking, painting, crafting, writing, or dancing, you must engage your senses, and surrender to the process.

Going into a creative state will awaken greater possibilities in your life. You will learn to hear the guidance of your heart more clearly when you tap into your creativity. Creativity requires you to get out of your head,  ‘go with the flow’, it’s amazing what truths pop up when you stop thinking. Polls have shown that people receive their best ideas when in the shower, driving, or otherwise focused. Your mind quiets when you are in engaged in a task, thus allowing answers to appear. Stop thinking and get creating if you’d like to feel more alive,

Speak Up!

Speaking our mind can often be a challenging concept, and terrifying reality. Fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias; to put it into perspective, some statistics say people fear it more than death. While expressing your truth may be frightening, it sure is gratifying (note I mean *Truth* here, as in your feelings, desires and dreams, not spewing your opinions, or criticisms on another).

We were born to express the insights, talents, and gifts that are unique to us. There is no other you in all of time, don’t leave this planet with your words still inside you – choose to live out loud and you will feel more alive. Integrity is about living true to who you are, and what you want. Speak your truth the world will listen, live your truth and the world will hear. Bonus coaching: What truths about yourself are you currently hiding? Who do you need to speak to in order to clear the air, or heal a wound?

Touch Yourself:

I believe that purgatory is feeling nothing. It is equivalent to existing in a void, or being a robot. While joy is the most sought after commodity, grief, melancholy, and anger serve their purpose as well. If you want to feel more alive, you must be willing to feel. Though pain hurts, it is only the flip side of our joy – to the depths that we travel, so too will we rise.

If an undesirable feeling is threatening to take you over, you can guide your emotions to another, by recalling things that make you feel happy, or safe. You cannot think two thoughts at one time, so by directing your thoughts you can always choose a better feeling.

Our feelings are great indicators, and guides, revealing the truth of any situation. Our bodies translate feelings differently, relaying messages of pleasure, or repulsion. Passion makes the temperature rise, and heart beat faster, while fear makes us feel cold, or like we can’t breathe. Good feelings often indicate a “Yes”, and negative feelings are a sign of a “No”. Get quiet and listen to what your body telling you.

The key to self-care is daily practice. Yesterday’s shower, meals, and sleep, will not carry you through today; the same can be said of self-care. My challenge to you this week is to practice one of these aliveness enhancers daily. Before you start rate how alive you feel on a scale of 0-100, zero being the lowest, and one hundred being the highest; then rate yourself again before and after trying each aliveness enhancer, and at the end of the week when you’ve practiced all seven. I guarantee you will not only feel more alive, you’ll feel happier and more fulfilled. Comment to share your experience with our self-care community.

Self-Care Lesson #1: You Need It, Now!

Self-Care Lesson #1: You Need It, Now!

Self-Care can be a tricky need to fulfill; we need it daily, yet its requirements are constantly changing. In school we’re taught historical data and how to figure out mathematical equations, yet when it comes to ‘self-care’, at best, most of us only learn how to survive.

Few know how to thrive.

While integral to our health, well-being and happiness, self-care is a skill that’s infrequently taught, and rarely revered. Obvious self-care requirements like eating, sleeping and personal hygiene are a given; to be accepted in modern society you need to clean yourself; to live with some semblance of health you must properly balance sleep and nutrition.

Beyond the basics, most people haven’t a clue what ‘self-care’ really means, or how to provide it for themselves.

Quantity trumps quality these days. We live in a society that wants more: more than our parents; more for our kids; more out of life. In our never-ending pursuit to ‘fill up our plate’ we have forgotten how to ‘fill up our cup’. Never before in human history have people had so much and felt so little fulfillment. With the ‘world at our fingertips’ in our technological age it’s now commonplace to be perpetually tethered to an electronic device; at once connected to the world-at-large and disconnected to oneself. This separation of self from soul has left all but the wisest among us empty, stuffing our lives with ‘fast-food moments’, while desperately seeking meaning, as if it were oxygen.

Self-Care is oxygen.

Nowadays the pursuit of money to fund luxury is seen as honorable, while the act of self-care is viewed as indulgence. We live in a society that prides itself on busyness, an endless maze that takes us astray and leads to burnout. Moms wear their sleeplessness as a badge of honor, as they frantically squeeze another extracurricular into their child’s already over-scheduled life. Businessmen pridefully boast about their ninety hour work week, while ignoring their ever-expanding waistline, and declining health.

In some way, shape or form, day-to-day life gets us off-balance and self-care is how we navigate through the turbulence.

Chances are, more often than not you feel less than your best, and sadly, this is our societal norm. Think about it: how many times have you felt like crap — exhausted, stressed, anxious, unfulfilled, angry, or worse, completely shutdown– and rather than explore how you could better yourself, you accepted feeling bad as a part of life?

Today that pattern ends. Welcome to Self-Care School.

Self-Care is a commitment to fill your cup, daily, so you have plenty to give to others.

Self-Care partners ongoing exploration [of one’s needs] with life-affirming actions. Self-Care is choosing to examine what you’re eating, and make changes when necessary, rather than accept another stomach ache as a side-effect of eating. Self-Care is ditching the ‘friend’ who constantly puts you down in favor of making it a priority to invest in relationships that uplift you.

Self-Care is saying ‘no’ to another so you can say ‘yes’ to yourself.

A Self-Care Specialist™ is one who commits to caring for their own physical, emotional and spiritual needs, on a daily basis. The first step is to uncover your needs; this begins with a daily assessment. Self-Care requires you to connect with yourself as you would your partner, child, or cherished friend. Ask questions, listen, take time daily to get to know who you are and what you need. Then, as a loving mother tends to her child, take care of yourself.

What area of your life is most in need of attention, right now?

Explore and rate each area of the Self-Care Wheel, on a scale of 0 (totally depleted) to 100 (totally fulfilled), then find one way to improve each area with self-care. Your first thought might be, “I don’t know what I need”, don’t listen, that’s fear talking.

Get out a pen and paper and brainstorm possibilities, when you start to feel a sense of peace, or aliveness, you can be sure you’ve found your self-care solution. This same process of exploration will ever-guide you back to your Truth, and with each self-care step you’ll find yourself moving forward on the path of fulfillment and joy.

Dark Days? Just Add Color

Dark Days? Just Add Color

It has been proven that when we look good, we often feel better. That’s because it’s a lot easier to believe you are fabulous, when you look fabulous. If you want to start exploring new options for your life, why not start with your wardrobe? Experimenting with color and style is a safe way to try on a new you and gain new perspective for your life.

Adding colorful accessories like a purse, necklace, or pair of shoes can change your look, and your outlook on life. With every visible change you make to your wardrobe see yourself able to make changes in your life just as easily. Imagine that you can adorn yourself with qualities like, optimism, confidence and enthusiasm, while discarding all doubts and fears, like an old coat that no longer fits. Once you have refocused your mind on the positive you will feel empowered to make other improvements and changes in your life.

Unlike our clothing, our lives must be custom designed, if they are to fit well.

Adding color to your wardrobe can be an instant mood lifter, shifting both your perspective and how others view you. Red renews passion and says “I am sexy and alive” Yellow boosts confidence and says, “I am powerful and compassionate.” Orange, will restore your vitality while expressing, “I am creative and courageous.” Prisons and hospitals are painted light blue because the color has a calming effect and induces a state of peace. Every color in the spectrum emits an energy that affects us; the real reason women are so drawn to shades of pink, is that this color reflects our natural state of unconditional love.

The next time a dark mood threatens to take over your day, lighten up with some color.

  • Red lifts the spirits by stimulating passion and enthusiasm. It is a powerful color which stirs the inner fires, increasing intensity. When you wish to make a bold statement, red will help you to captivate your audience and claim attention.
  • Orange increases vitality while expressing uniqueness and creativity. When you wish to express your individuality, orange is a dynamic choice.
  • Yellow has a centering affect and reconnects us with our personal power and sense of self worth. Infuse your wardrobe with a bit of yellow when you need to make an important speech; it portrays confidence and encourages trust.
  • Green has an incredibly energizing affect on the body, this color will help you to relax and feel comfortable in any situation. Green is the color of life and love. Next time you are outdoors amidst the grass and trees, stop to enjoy the view, while taking three deep, slow breaths-you will feel instantly refreshed.
  • Blue emits a peaceful, yet strong vibration and aids us in clear communication. Just as the sky and sea are in constant movement, the energy of blue shades will help us move forward into the flow of life; wear during phases of expansion and growth.
  • Violet is the color of royalty and offers protection from lower level energies. It is often called the color of mystics. Add purple to your wardrobe when you wish to connect with your spiritual side.
  • White connects us with the Divine. It reflects a positive nature and exudes a sense of purity and innocence. Wearing white is great when you are making a fresh start; it reflects the energy of a clean slate and opens one to the realm of possibilities.
  • Pink is great when you want to feel like a girl again. This ultra-feminine color exudes a calming sense of unconditional love. Pink is uplifting and energizing. If you find red to be too intense, pink is a great alternative. Red stimulates physical attraction, while pink stimulates a love match.
