What is Optimal Health?

What is Optimal Health?

We live in a society where we are on overload. We have everything at our fingertips, and with this abundant amount of information, we are confused.  We are living excessively; in debt, acquiring too many things, becoming over weight, and this is just the beginning.  It’s time to get back to the basics to create optimal health.

What is optimal health? It’s not just an absence of disease but a balance between physical, mental, emotional, environmental, spiritual and social components.  It is freedom from limitations and restrictions, physical freedom of movement, strength, flexibility, durability and balance. It’s a complete state of wellness, a place where you genuinely feel alive.

To achieve and sustain optimal health, ailments or not, we need perspective. When we “get into ourselves” or focus on the area that needs attention, our intuition comes into play and we become aware and explore how to optimize that area. Whether it’s eating nutrient dense food, hiking in the mountains, traveling, finding a loving partner, adopting a pet, or whatever else that helps us create a passionate life full of purpose.

The only person who can bring your life back into balance and your health to its most favorable state is YOU.  Simply put – if you don’t take control of your life, outside influences will.  External factors can trigger illness such as environmental toxins or injuries that can lead to imbalance, but the root of a health challenge is most likely related to an emotional or spiritual component. When these are taken into consideration, we experience positive or optimal outcomes.

Back in the 1900’s our major cause of early death was infectious diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or enteritis.  In our modern culture, it is chronic lifestyles diseases such as heart disease, cancer and emphysema/bronchitis.  To break the chain of chronic disease we must prioritize these goals; regular physical activity, good nutrition and stress management.

The whole reason we want to be healthy, after all, is to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. By learning, and transforming, we can achieve the state of wellness we seek, without unnecessary deprivation and pointless sacrifice. Instead of dieting, we can increase our intake of whole, unprocessed foods that are both healthy and delicious, and we can celebrate our meals with flowers, music and good company. Instead of exercising on a treadmill at the local gym, we can enjoy moving our bodies while hiking in the woods, practicing yoga on the beach or dancing at a night club. These changes are all about living, which is the point of being well.

Reaching optimal wellness does not need to be a chore; rather, it can be an adventure. By getting creative about how to expand into the life we want, and by truly savoring this life — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually — we can create new paths to wellness that leave us feeling better on every level. And that is what health is all about.

Life is not simply about surviving, it’s about thriving.  You have the opportunity to do it now.

NO WORRIES: Advice for the Anxious

QUESTION: Do you have any tips on how to deal with anxiety? I’ve always been a bit jumpy, but in recent years it has morphed into an issue. I worry all the time! I worry when I am at work, I worry at school, I worry when I have to talk to someone, or if I am in a crowd. I’m always anxious because I know I am going to mess up in some way.

I feel like a real loser sometimes, like I just can’t get a grip on it. I am a guy and I’m supposed to be strong. Anxiety makes me feel like a big wimp. I really need help! I am a full-time student and can’t afford therapy, and I have no insurance so medication is out of the question.

Can you share some advice for beating anxiety on my own?

~Shaky in St. Louis

COACH KRISTA-LYNN’S ADVICE:

Though it is often said in jest, quite literally, your problems are all in your mind, Shaky!  Your anxiety is created by the thoughts you choose to focus on, which are hurtful and cause you stress.  Two thoughts cannot exist simultaneously, which means that when you are focused on thoughts like, “I’m a loser who’s going to mess up” you have blocked out the thoughts that create peace of mind.

Worrying is a choice. While we may not choose the thoughts that run through our minds, we do choose what we focus on. You really can choose not to worry, you may have to make that choice one thousand times, but, with practice, you will learn a better way and find peace.

By monitoring your thoughts, and choosing to focus your attention on solutions, rather than problems, the effects of anxiety will cease to have a hold on you. Meditation with the use of positive affirmations will assist you in focusing your attention in the right direction.

The first step in calming your mind is simply to breathe. As soon as you catch yourself worrying, stop, and take several deep breaths; pull the air deep into your belly, and up into your lungs, then slowly release. Keep breathing fully and slowly, until you feel centered and calm.

Once you have centered yourself, begin to notice the thoughts going through your mind. Note how you feel when you focus upon a thought. Though we have many, there are really just two kinds of thoughts; those that feel good and those that feel bad when we focus on them.

The sensations running through your body will tell you if a thought is good or bad for you. Negative thoughts, like worry, will often make your belly tighten and constrict, they create fear and feel bad. Positive thoughts will uplift you, bringing a sense of vitality and peace. You can always change your thoughts by shifting your focus to something that feels better.

Reciting affirmations, either silently or aloud, will help you to remain focused on the positive. Create and recite affirmations that empower you, making you feel strong and brave. You’ve spent enough time putting yourself down, now it is time to lift yourself up. It is imperative that you start focusing on what is right about you.

Right now you are just stuck in a pattern; you’ve grown accustomed to suffering. Set a new intention! Decide right now that you deserve joy, peace, happiness and contentment.

When you decide that you deserve to feel good you will start to get better.

It will require some work on your part, but I promise you, you can overcome this problem. It was brave of you to reach out for support, and I encourage you to remain open to assistance. You don’t have to go this alone!

Sometimes psychotherapy is the best route, and you may be wrong about not being able to afford it. Most cities have centers (State funded or non-profit) that offer low to no-cost counseling; often the cost of a session is offered on a “sliding scale” based on what you earn. Schools also offer discounted or free counseling to their students, and the same can be said about medications.

I suggest doing some research to find out about mental health programs in your area. You’ll find the information a wealth of information in your local newspapers and phone book, and on the internet. There is hope! Sometimes you just need to dig a bit to get to the solution.

If your symptoms do persist, or increase, I strongly encourage you to seek professional counseling immediately. The following links will help you to find a licensed therapist in your area:

Since you specifically mentioned becoming anxious when you have to speak with someone, or at work, I would say that low self-esteem is causing the brunt of your problems. It sounds to me that you worry most about what people will think of you, or that you may fail, or say something silly. It’s time to rewrite the story! Choose to have some faith in your abilities and your anxieties will begin to wane.

With continuous effort you can change your thoughts and anxiety will be a thing of the past. I say this with absolute confidence, since I was plagued for years with a totally debilitating anxiety/panic disorder. By changing the way I think my life has changed for the better! You, too, can take charge of your mind and claim the inner peace that is your right.

READER RESPONSE:

I was extremely impressed by your answers, Krista-Lynn—-I noticed the depth and breadth of your intelligence with your first appearance. I thought your answer to the guy who experienced constant anxiety was BRILLIANT!

95% of People Don’t Achieve Goals, Here’s the Secret to Success.

As a child I bet you spent hours of time exploring, “Who am I going to be when I grow up?”

Imagination runs wild in our youth, we’re filled with fantasies and believe anything is possible.

With no fear of failure, and little knowledge of what’s required to bring a dream to life, children chart course for the future, claiming their chosen role of doctor, movie star, or President of the United States, with faith they will be whatever they want!

You and I are no different.

There was a time when we believed our future role in life required little more than choosing.

Then we grew up.

For most of us, ‘growing up’ means dreams of unparalleled fulfillment get put on the back burner in exchange for ‘real life’, which typically revolves around responsibility, and for many, a struggle to survive. Putting food on the table is a need, and need trumps desire.

Though easy to blame our lack of initiative on societal structures, family obligations, or pragmatic thinking, the real reason people set their heart’s desires aside is because humans, by nature, are quitters. Now before you get your panties in a bunch hear me out.

Do all humans quit on their dreams?

No.

But sadly, most do.

Based on a study by the Harvard Business School, [approximately] 95% of humans will NEVER turn their dreams into reality.

Why?  Because fear takes over and most people get scared off by the mere thought of obstacles, quitting during the idea stage (dream), before they’ve even started (goal). In fact, the study shows that 70% of people have no goals in life whatsoever! At best, they have dreams, which typically equates to fantasies; ie: never gonna happen.

While fantasies can be fun, dreams are child’s play.

Goals are for grown ups. A dream is a wish, while a goal is a commitment to achieve something within a given a timeline. A goal is clearly defined and includes plan of action.

Let’s put it into perspective the difference between a dream and a goal: if you want to drop forty pounds and be healthier, stronger, and more fit, dreaming about it may feel good, but it won’t create the results you desire. If there’s no action, it’s just a dream, when you wake up, your situation will be exactly the same.

Change requires action. On average, 30% of people will commit to ‘Go for it’ . . . but they, too, will not follow through. Of this remaining 30% of people, 10% try to pursue a goal, but quit when faced with the first obstacle, and 15% quit after the first few stumbling blocks.

Few have the staying power of Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, who tried and failed 10,000 times, before seeing the light. He stands atop an elite group: a mere 5% of humans who follow their dream through to reality – no matter what it takes to actualize!

What sets this group of individuals apart is this: they have clearly defined goals and follow a plan of action, and if that plan doesn’t work they come up with another. The 5% of people who bring their goals to fruition achieve more than the other 95% COMBINED!

What category will you choose to be in?

Personally, professionally and financially, only 5% of people are rising to the top because the other 95% is hiding in the dark. Step into the Light! I promise you that just beyond that challenge is a reward greater than any you’ve ever known.

Hear these words: you deserve optimal health, vibrant wellness and joyful aliveness. You deserve to thrive, prosper and live a fulfilling life guided by a deep sense of meaning and purpose.

Here’s the catch, only you can create that for yourself. You alone have the power to turn your dreams into reality.

I ask you to take the first step today, right now.

To start, pick one area of your life that you’d like to improve. The Wheel of Life will help you discern where you’re going to get the most ‘bang for your time investment buck’. Take time now to get honest with yourself regarding your level of fulfillment with the various areas of your life; rating each area on a scale of 0-10, with ten signifying the highest level of fulfillment.

Start with the area of your life that demands your immediate attention, or the one that brings you the most joy when you imagine a ‘new and improved’ version of yourself.

Now that you know what you want / need, it’s time to commit to a goal! Remember, a goal is clearly defined, has a timeframe for completion and is trackable.

Keep your goal specific and simple.

Once clear on your goal (results you desire) it’s time to choose the actions you will take (steps forward) that ensure you can easily gauge your progress (or lack thereof).

Suss out what you need to say, “No” to, in order to say, “Yes” to your desire, then commit! Once you’ve ‘cleared the path’, start moving forward, one positive, life-affirming step at a time.

Small, consistent steps lead to great leaps forward.

  1. Write down your goal and action plan in a notebook.
  2. Check-in daily to assess if you’re making the best choices.
  3. Celebrate every teeny-tiny bit of progress, and when you get off-track (which you probably will), quickly adjust.

The old adage of ‘getting back on the horse’ after we fall is a good one — resist the urge to give up, or worse, beat yourself up over perceived failure— simply get up, dust yourself off, and get going again! The key to success is to prioritize yourself, and your goal. You’ve committed, now you must not quit

Know that I am rooting for you, I believe in you, and the amazing possibilities for your life! Join me at www.facebook.com/selfcaretips to share your goal and celebrate your progress, together, as a community, we can provide each other daily accountability, encouragement and support!

The ‘secret to success’ is simple: commit, don’t quit.

DON’T GIVE UP! Even if it takes you 10,001 tries.

Dance Your A$$ Off!

Dance Your A$$ Off!

A dance a day can lift your spirits, transform your body and bring more joy into your life. Not only will you be happier if you have a dance a day (and I guarantee this!) but you will relieve tension, stress and anxiety as you shake your booty and move your hips.

If school children were given more freedom of movement -allowing them to stretch and wiggle about- I believe that we would see a rapid decline in diagnosed cases of ADD and ADHD. Many of these kids aren’t battling an illness or issue, they simply need to move.

My own work improved greatly when I began playing music in the office and gave myself permission to dance about, rather than stay glued to my chair. We all work best in different ways. Some of us need complete silence to find our zone and others thrive while multi-tasking, eventually though, we all need a break. Ideally, we all need time each day just to be, time to simply listen and reflect, which is a form of meditation.

When you think of meditation you probably imagine someone in the lotus position (legs crossed) with hands in prayer pose, either silent or chanting a mantra like OM. While this is one form of meditation, another is the strength building movements of Yoga. Anything that calms you and helps you to find your inner peace can be seen as a form of meditation.

I have found dance to be one of the most effective forms of meditation for me. I center and ground while moving through any apparent blocks or stiff spots in my body. I am free when I dance.

Dancing helps me to focus and find my flow. Whenever I feel stuck I can find a tune that will get me on my feet and out of my rut. Try it: next time you are spun for a loop, or stressed to the gills, turn on the music, get up and dance! I have found that on days that I dance I am happier, more relaxed and generally more productive. When I forget (and how easily we do) I start to feel jammed up, I am achy and tense; both in body and mind.

Dancing not only clears my mind, it keeps my body toned and limber.  If you’ve got a few pounds to shed dancing is a great cardio workout, you can literally dance your ass off!

Many gyms and clubs now offer classes in various forms of dance. I choose to simply turn on the stereo and go. Like many of us, I dread the idea of a work out. While dancing can be strenuous the more I dance the more I need this time I see as play, and not work. Dancing has not only transformed my body, it can instantly shift my mood when I am down.

The one proven remedy I have found to alleviate stress, tone muscles and increase joy is to get up and dance!

GET TUNED IN & TURNED ON: 7 Ways to Feel More Alive

GET TUNED IN & TURNED ON: 7 Ways to Feel More Alive

Is it possible to feel more alive than you do right now?Absolutely! I’m sure you’ve experienced both being alive, and being ALIVE: some days you are breathing, but you feel like your barely even there; other days, you are filled with a sense of exhilaration and vitality. It’s a palatable difference, something along the lines of watching TV on a black & white mini, or a flat screen, high-definition, plasma television. It’s the same experience, but the quality is worlds apart.

If you are normal you have been up, down, and everywhere in between. We understand the ups and downs of life, and have come to expect them. Down phases often bring us to a halt. Up phases wake us up. Surviving the moments in-between, is where most people exist, most of the time.

Life takes over and time seems to constrict us. We all envision of our best life, but actually having the courage to live it is another thing. Everyone uses the excuse that they would really start living, if they only had more time: while the time for living is right now.

When our eyes are open, we see there are endless reasons to celebrate each day. We start to feel a bit dead inside when we forget. The key to feeling alive is to live. Carpe Diem! Seizing the moment is the surest way to feel alive.

Are you ready to live more fully?

The following 7 Ways to Feel More Alive will help you to add more life to your life:

Stop Living in the Past:

The surest way to kill the moment is to live in the past, or get lost in the future. We must learn to live our lives in the now, or be always one step away from ourselves. Finding our rhythm and balance is a process that can only be found by living in the moment. If you stop running and take a few deep breaths, you will know exactly what you need in any given moment.

Self-Care starts with the simple act of checking in with yourself, to assess how you are and what you need. Take time to check in with yourself throughout the day and ask yourself the important questions. How am I feeling right now? What do I need right now? Ask your body what type of food it needs to be healthy, and strong; a response or knowing will guide you.

Your soul will reveal what it needs to thrive as well. Our greatest passions and joys are the food of the soul. If you find yourself feeling off centered, caught somewhere between yesterday, and tomorrow, spending a few minutes breathing deeply in quiet reflection, can instantly restart your day. While breathing slowly, wiggle and stretch about until your mind and body calm, then relax into the moment. When joy is lacking in your life you can be sure your soul is unfulfilled. To jump-start your joy take time to listen to the longings of your soul, it knows your purpose and will guide you to deeper meaning.

Connect with Your Mama:

We live on a planet that was created to sustain us. Vegetables, and fruits spring forth to nourish us, helping us grow strong, and remain healthy. Everything we need is supplied for us. The earth itself supports us, while trees provide shelter, and create the air we depend on. What was once a forest is now one of our greatest resources: cotton, paper, wood; where would we be without the trees? Dead, that’s where.

Realize how lucky you are! Give thanks for all that you have, and you will feel more alive. Spending time in nature will reconnect you with your Source and awaken your senses. Our Mama loves us. Whenever you feel out of sorts, or alone, connecting with nature will help you find your center. “Grounding” is an excellent way to clear your mind, release toxins from your body, and center in the moment; take off your shoes and walk on the ground while consciously connecting to the earth. Just as tress clean the air, the earth can assist in cleansing our body and mind.

Talk to Your Father:

There comes a time to stop thinking and start seeking answers. Our sense of value and worth never comes from an outside force; press, property and prestige will only get you so far. Joy is a quality that comes from within; it is our true nature (imagine a baby and  you’ll get what I mean). Inner peace is only obtained if one works for it. Life comes at us fast and hard, we create peace one healthy, positive choice at a time.

When we connect with God (Replace with Higher Self, Source or Infinite Intelligence if you wish) we feel more centered, alive and fulfilled. Answers come easily when we look within, one must only get quiet enough to listen. When we learn to listen to our hearts—which is where God lives—the ever guiding voice within will always lead us down the best path. Knowing what you need in any given moment requires knowing who you are. Make a commitment to spend less time talking to others — about your problems, stress, worries, etc– and take time daily to connect with yourself, calling on your soul for guidance.  Spiritual awareness will bring you to life.

Stop and Smell the Flowers:

While it sounds like a cliché, this is sage advice. The sight of flowers brings joy, their colors and fragrances uplift us, creating more endorphins – the happy chemicals in our brain.Sending a bouquet of flowers is just about guaranteed to make anyone smile. Flowers are nature’s candy.

Spend some time in nature exploring the flowers in your area. They attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other magical beings that are a wonder to behold. If you want to feel more alive, reclaim your sense of wonder and awe. Learn to slow down and appreciate your surroundings and all the pleasures of God’s green earth. Bonus tip: instead of using synthetic medicine try essential oils, which are ‘gifts of the earth’ created by plants and flowers. Essential Oils have natural health benefits ranging from lessening anxiety to soothing your muscles after a Zumba class.

Get Creative:

To create is to surrender. Creating is an intuitive act. Though you may start out with a game plan, your creation will eventually take on a mind of its own, guiding, and moving you forward. Whether it be cooking, painting, crafting, writing, or dancing, you must engage your senses, and surrender to the process.

Going into a creative state will awaken greater possibilities in your life. You will learn to hear the guidance of your heart more clearly when you tap into your creativity. Creativity requires you to get out of your head,  ‘go with the flow’, it’s amazing what truths pop up when you stop thinking. Polls have shown that people receive their best ideas when in the shower, driving, or otherwise focused. Your mind quiets when you are in engaged in a task, thus allowing answers to appear. Stop thinking and get creating if you’d like to feel more alive,

Speak Up!

Speaking our mind can often be a challenging concept, and terrifying reality. Fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias; to put it into perspective, some statistics say people fear it more than death. While expressing your truth may be frightening, it sure is gratifying (note I mean *Truth* here, as in your feelings, desires and dreams, not spewing your opinions, or criticisms on another).

We were born to express the insights, talents, and gifts that are unique to us. There is no other you in all of time, don’t leave this planet with your words still inside you – choose to live out loud and you will feel more alive. Integrity is about living true to who you are, and what you want. Speak your truth the world will listen, live your truth and the world will hear. Bonus coaching: What truths about yourself are you currently hiding? Who do you need to speak to in order to clear the air, or heal a wound?

Touch Yourself:

I believe that purgatory is feeling nothing. It is equivalent to existing in a void, or being a robot. While joy is the most sought after commodity, grief, melancholy, and anger serve their purpose as well. If you want to feel more alive, you must be willing to feel. Though pain hurts, it is only the flip side of our joy – to the depths that we travel, so too will we rise.

If an undesirable feeling is threatening to take you over, you can guide your emotions to another, by recalling things that make you feel happy, or safe. You cannot think two thoughts at one time, so by directing your thoughts you can always choose a better feeling.

Our feelings are great indicators, and guides, revealing the truth of any situation. Our bodies translate feelings differently, relaying messages of pleasure, or repulsion. Passion makes the temperature rise, and heart beat faster, while fear makes us feel cold, or like we can’t breathe. Good feelings often indicate a “Yes”, and negative feelings are a sign of a “No”. Get quiet and listen to what your body telling you.

The key to self-care is daily practice. Yesterday’s shower, meals, and sleep, will not carry you through today; the same can be said of self-care. My challenge to you this week is to practice one of these aliveness enhancers daily. Before you start rate how alive you feel on a scale of 0-100, zero being the lowest, and one hundred being the highest; then rate yourself again before and after trying each aliveness enhancer, and at the end of the week when you’ve practiced all seven. I guarantee you will not only feel more alive, you’ll feel happier and more fulfilled. Comment to share your experience with our self-care community.
